Like sculptors who are said to draw in space,
Mr. Gimpaya seems to paint with light, and
whether the result is soft, as in the nocturnal scene
of a monument silhouetted against a distant Ferris wheel,
which is nothing but a gleaming disc in the night sky,
or sharp, like the view of a bridge on the Seine at twilight,
it is never less than memorable.

Out of the dark comes light. Frank Gimpaya’s photography is of dark places,
all in some degree becoming luminous,
but well before dawn. In this mysterious darkness,
we are present as silent observers.

Professor of Art History, School of Visual Arts
